In December the Nobel Committee held a 100th Anniversary Celebration of the creation of the Nobel Prizes. Of the 180 Laureates in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics, two were women and none were black! At Bell Labs in the early seventies we initiated a Summer Research Program for Women and Minorities, a Cooperative Research Fellowship Program for Minorities and a Graduate Research Program for Women. These programs were small but we had hoped that others would follow creating additional programs, and we would greatly change the numbers of blacks and women in the sciences. Today, the number of women in physics has been making gradual but steady progress, the percentage of women receiving Phd’s has doubled since the seventies to roughly 14small. These numbers show how difficult it is to change social issues of this type.
