In October 2000, a new class of dynamic symmetries was introduced to describe spectra of systems at the critical point of quantum phase transitions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3580 (2000)]. This new class extends the concept of dynamic symmetry to one of the most challenging and sensitive situations one may encounter in quantal systems. Spectra are given in terms of zeros of special functions. In particular, for second order transitions, energy levels at the critical point are given in terms of zeros of Bessel functions (Euclidean invariance). In this presentation, the new class of symmetries will be discussed and applications to spectra of atomic nuclei at the critical point of the U(5)-SO(6) shape phase transition will be presented. The new symmetry can be formulated in any number of dimensions and has potential applications in several areas of Physics and Chemistry. Possible applications to systems other than nuclei (molecules, atomic clusters, polymers, etc.) will be mentioned.
