Scientific paper

Problems in astrophysics that may be addressed with the next generation of IR space observations like Edison are discussed, including IR emission from circumstellar material, protoplanetary disks, winds of massive stars, and AGB and post-AGB stars. Emphasis is placed on observations that require high spatial and/or spectral resolution and thus cannot or can only partly be addressed with ISO or SIRTF. Recommendations are made regarding focal plane instruments that are needed for the observations.
