We present both theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the kinetics of dimerization for some sample polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The experimental measurements extend down to temperatures as low as 60 K. The theoretical predictions, which are based on careful consideration of the intermolecular interaction energies and intermolecular dynamics, yield estimates for the binding energy, equilibrium constant, and rate coefficient. These predictions are used to provide insights into (i) the role of PAH condensation in haze formation in Jupiter, (ii) the condensation of PAHs in the envelope of the carbon star IRC +10216, and (iii) the role of PAHs in the formation of soot at high temperatures.
