Molecular ions play a crucial role in the chemistry of the interstellar medium. As reagents and intermediates in many chemical reactions in the interstellar medium, they function as probes of the astrophysical and astrochemical conditions. To explore this important area of astrochemistry, our lab is developing a unique spectroscopic instrument called SCRIBES: Sensitive, Cooled, Resolved Ion BEam Spectrometer. This spectrometer creates a fast ion beam on which infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry can be performed. SCRIBES should possess many useful features, such as ion-neutral discrimination, narrow linewidth spectra, rotational cooling using supersonic expansion, cavity enhancement of signal, and mass identification. These features will be invaluable in the laboratory study of molecular ions. Preliminary testing and troubleshooting is continuing by attempting to acquire the rovibronic spectrum of a test ion, N2+. In recent months, the cold cathode test source has been modified to induce collisions among N2+ ions as soon as they are created. Also, mass spectral work on the ion beam has led to better characterization and additional information. Finally, highly sensitive spectroscopic techniques such as Cavity Enhanced Velocity Modulation Spectroscopy (CEVMS) on a positive column discharge cell have been developed as a diagnostic tool for troubleshooting SCRIBES.
