The effect of gravitational lensing on our picture of the large-scale
universe is examined. Emphasis is given to the appearance of distant
quasars adjacent to nearby galaxies. It is concluded that there is a
real possibility that gravitational lensing is creating a seriously
distorted image of the universe.
