Scientific paper

Observations of the recently identified R Coronae Borealis star NSV 6708 are discussed. The available photometry of this object reveal low-amplitude variations of period 110 d for 1.5 cycles before the star entered a 7-mag amplitude decline. The decline was similar to the 1985 decline of the class prototype R CrB in that the colors of the star were observed to redden from the onset of the decline. The reddening resembles interstellar reddening, indicating that the obscuring dust has extinction properties similar to that of interstellar dust. Spectra of NSV 6708 show much stronger hydrogen lines than in published spectra of other R CrB stars, but it is indicated that NSV 6708 may not be unique in this respect.
