A model is developed for the degassing of Xe, Ar, and He from the earth. The modeled earth is divded into three reservoirs: undegassed mantle, degassed mantle or mid-ocean ridge basalt mantle, and atmosphere plus continental crust. The model is consistent with present-day noble gas isotope ratios of Xe-129/Xe-130, Ar-40/Ar-36, and He-4/He-3 in the three reservoirs. It is shown that Ar-He isotope systematics require He to be degassed more slowly than Ar and that He is degassed faster than other gases due to its low solubility in silicate melt. Consideration is given to the relationship between isotope ratios of noble gases in the various earth reservoirs and the solubilities of the gases in basaltic melt.
