The modus operandi of PN-CCD's (charge coupled devices) with high detection probability for soft x rays is presented with a view to x ray astronomy. The transfer efficiency of a two dimensional CCD was determined for standard conditions as well as in vacuum at a detector temperature of 135 K using laser flashes. In both cases the efficiency is higher than 0.995 per image cell at a timing pulse rate of 1 MHz and a transported charge of about 80,000 electrons. The separation between the image columns is so effective that a charge loss to neighboring columns was not found. The energy resolution is limited to 3.6 keV by the noise of the applied hybrid preamplifier.
