A method for the improvement of image quality through the comparison of a given image with the mean of the five neighboring images iteratively is presently appolied to the images taken by Giotto's Halley Multicolor Camera during its March 13, 1986 flyby of Comet Halley. Due to the spin of the Giotto spacecraft, the exposure times had to decrease to 0.3 msec/image pixel in order to achieve the resolution desired. A composite image is obtainable which contains all the information received from the main sensor during the last 5 min of camera operation; the dynamic range of the data exceeds printing capability.
