The evolution of ionospheric 'holes' formed as a result of the injection of chemically active, plasma-removing mixtures is investigated on the basis of a numerical solution of diffusion equations for plasma components. An analysis is made of mechanisms controlling the diffusion of arbitrary axisymmetric irregularities with two ion species in the F-region. It is shown that, as a result of the diffusion of an irregularity of small transverse scale, background ions are pulled by an electric field into the central part of the bunch. The upper part of the irregularity is subject to ambipolar diffusion while the lower part is subject to the 'short-circuit' mechanism.
