A radiative transfer problem for an optically thick nonrelativistic plasma with parameters typical for X-ray emitting neutron stars (NS) is considered, based on a diffusion approximation with allowance for Comptonization. Numerical solutions of the transfer equation are obtained for a semiinfinite plane-parallel plasma and for a plasma slab in the presence of incident cool blackbody radiation. The results obtained are used to study X-ray bursters as well as to investigate Cyg X-1.
