This paper describes the features and examines the merits of three basic interferometric techniques for a single telescope, using two-dimensional IR arrays: speckle interferometry, pupil plane interferometry, and speckle holography. It is shown that the holographic method has all the required characteristics for spatial resolution. It provides high signal-to-noise ratio, is insensitive to aberrations, and does not suffer calibration problems. It is ideal for the detection of diffuse extended structures around bright sources.
