A modified form of Lucy's (1967) gravity-darkening law appropriate for a star with a convective envelope is obtained. It is shown that for the secondary component in WUMa-type stars beta = 0.08 and does not change significantly with q and the mass of the secondary component. For the secondary main sequence component in cataclysmic variables the gravity-darkening exponent does change with mass.
