The near-IR CCD images and IDS spectrum obtained for the heavily obscured optical counterpart of the southern radio source PKS 1343-601 indicate that it is a highly reddened E0 galaxy of 28-arcsec angular extent; its measured redshift of 3641 + or - 20 km/sec indicates a distance of 73 Mpc. An absolute magnitude of -24 + or - 1 mag is determined, together with an integrated radio luminosity of 5 x 10 to the 42 ergs/sec.
