Our observations of star formation regions and young compact clusters will address: i) stellar collapse and commencement of nuclear burning - associated high X-ray activity makes such observations one of the best techniques for selecting young stars in molecular clouds for detailed study; and ii) the question of the existence of the X-ray activity in low mass stars at the onset of full convection - the problem of conflicting evidence arising from studies of field M dwarfs can be addressed by observing young open clusters cores over a range of ages and by examining the behavior of Lx and Lx/L_bol with spectral type and/or rotation.
