What is space weather? The definition most frequently quoted is that of the US National Space Weather Programme: "conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and can endanger human life or health. This definition demonstrates that space weather encompasses a collection of physical phenomena having their origin at the Sun and which give rise to effects that are of concern to society.
