Scientific paper

This paper provides a brief synthesis of certain aspects of the electric and magnetic field structure of a collisionless shock in the solar wind and outlines how electron heating and acceleration at the shock is related to that structure. Emphasis is on measurements obtained in the vicinity of Earth's bow shock, although the results should have broad applicability to other shocks in the heliosphere. .
