Following the successful prediction of Leonid storm activity in 2001 by recently-developed models of the Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle meteor stream, the Leonids of 2002 were awaited with great interest despite unfavourable moonlight conditions. As forecast, two intervals of storm-level activity were seen, the first in particular being well-covered by BAA Meteor Section observers in western Europe.
