The time and angle dependent yield of fluorescence line and continuum emission from a dense torus around a cosmological gamma-ray burst (GRB) source is simulated, taking into account photoionization, collisional ionization, recombination, and the self-consistent electron heating and cooling. A model calculation to reproduce the Fe Kα line emission observed in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 970508 indicates that ~10-4 Msolar of iron must be concentrated in a metal-enriched region of R<~10-3 pc of extent. Similar scenarios from misaligned GRBs may result in observable X-ray flashes with strong emission line features. .
