The molecules that have been observed in space, and evidence hinting at
stimulated rather spontaneous emission by them, are discussed. A good
deal of attention is devoted to the hydroxyl molecule (OH). Detection of
molecules may provide information bearing on the origin of stars, the
origin of the chemical elements, and the nature of background radiation.
