An account is given of the inward and outward directions in a curved space in the vicinity of a compact star, in view of the Schwarzschild solution describing the geometry both outside and inside a spherical star or outside a nonrotating, uncharged black hole. It is demonstrated that the local outward direction may in the global direction point toward the center of the star; while the centrifugal force always repels outward in the local sense, this is not always the case globally.
