The first phase of the Soviet Venera project for the study of Venus is described detailing spacecraft features and hypotheses on atmospheric and planetary composition. The Venera-3 was the first spacecraft to ground on another planet, and sensors on the fourth Venera mission recorded CO2, H2O, and other levels near Venus' surface. The Venera spacecraft on the seventh and eighth missions carried detectors such as gamma-ray spectrometers and a light meter, and surface photographs and more specific surface-composition data were provided on the last two missions.
