In evaluating the sensitivity of a Doppler shift measurement to solar oscillations, account must be taken of the effect of rotation, which causes a displacement of the spectral line that depends on position on the solar disk. For a narrow line this may result in a reduction over parts of the disk in the response of the line intensity to the line shift caused by a velocity field on the solar surface. The motion of the sun relative to the observer causes additional changes in sensitivity. An expression for the sensitivity of whole-disk observations is derived taking these effects into account. The expression is applied to resonant scattering cell observations using the K or Na D1 lines.
