The characteristics of electron precipitation bursts and their relationship with VLF waves were investigated by comparing the temporal and spectral characteristics of nighttime and daytime electron bursts with VLF data recorded at the Siple and Palmer Stations in Antarctica. Burst phenomena were studied both at midlatitudes (L = 2 to 3) and at higher L shells extending beyond the plasmapause. It was found that several of the electron bursts observed at nighttime and at L between 2 and 3 could be correlated with lightning-generated whistlers observed at Palmer Station. In addition, quasi-periodic bursts of several second duration observed at Siple Station could be correlated with clustered VFL chorus bursts (although no correlation of electron bursts with individual chorus spectral elements was found).
