Arguments are presented in favor of the existence of a class of pulsars in which the departure of the inertia tensor from its spherically symmetric form is determined mainly by magnetic distortion. Analysis is performed which demonstrates that at a certain flux density the components of the macroscopic stress tensor for a type II proton superconductor can be nearly three orders of magnitude greater than those of the Maxwell stress tensor for a uniform field of the same flux density. It is shown that for the Crab pulsar PSR 0531+21, the magnetic distortion is almost certainly more important than the elastic energy of the outer shell in determining the departure of the inertia tensor. The external field dipole moment of this pulsar is predicted to be approximately perpendicular to the spin direction, assuming that the internal and external magnetic fields have the same symmetry axis.
