Extensive photometric observations of H2252-035, a high energy X-ray source, with a time resolution of 5s, supplemented by 2 hr of spectroscopic observations with a time resolution of 2 min, are presented. Photometric observations were made in August, September, and October, 1980, on the 0.75 m and 1 m telescopes, and spectroscopic observations were carried out with the UNIT spectrograph and IPCS on the 1.9 m reflector, on September 2, 1980, from Sutherland, South Africa. A sequence of spectra, which was started at 21 h 02 m UT, lasting 2 hr, and each operation consisting of a 115-s integration and 5-s dump, covered the range 3600-7100 A, at a dispersion of approximately 220 A/mm. Fourier analysis of the photometric observations shows the presence of an 805.2 s periodicity which agrees with the observed X-ray period. The predominant light variation is an 858.68 s periodicity which is the reflected pulse from the secondary component of this close double star. Slow brightness variations, rapid flickering, and occasional bursts of quasi-periodic flares are reported. Spectroscopic observations show the presence of rapid variations in emission line intensity. It is suggested that the emission lines arise from two or more independently varying sources.
