A recipe for calculating Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections as a function of temperature from the existing excitation function is discussed. Detailed formulas are given for the various portions of this excitation function which in general contains both resolved resonance parts and an unresolved resonant part. For the temperature region considered, the details of the thermal (0.0253 eV) capture cross section and a possible direct capture component are of importance. The treatment of resolved resonances are discussed depending on the characteristics of the resonance parameters, with particular attention given to a commonly encountered situation in which the excitation function is known only over a portion of the relevant energy range. In addition to a compilation of calculated Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections vs temperature, examples illustrating the various details of the recipe are discussed.
