Observations with high spectral sensitivity of 22 GHz H2O masers associated with 15 Mira and semiregular variables motivate a careful comparison of the maximum velocity ranges Vmax relative to the stellar velocity for various molecular species found in the circumstellar envelopes. From the maser profiles there is little support for the commonly assumed sequence. Instead, the average values of Vmax for the SiO, H2O, and OH masers are nearly identical. These results suggest that systematic acceleration of the gas can begin inside the outer radius of the SiO shell at a distance not more than 10 AU from the photosphere. They are consistent with recent infrared results (which indicate the presence of dust within a few stellar radii) and with recent dynamical models for the velocity structure close to the star.
