The environments of Seyfert galaxies are compared to the environments of non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies using galaxy counts obtained from the Palomar Observaory Sky Survey prints. While previous work by Dahari, confirmed here, indicates that Seyfert galaxies are more likely to have close companion galaxies than field galaxies, the Seyfert galaxies examined here have essentially the same environments as the comparison sample of non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies. The IRAS colors of the Seyfert and non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies are used to distinguish between Seyfert activity and bursts of star formation. The results suggest that close companion galaxies enhance star formation rather than directly enhancing Seyfert-like activity.
