The production of neutrons from C-13(alpha,n)O-16 is explored, and four different regimes in the concomitant nucleosynthesis process are identified which are characterized by different relative values of the lifetimes of the ingested protons against capture by C-12, of N-13 against beta-decay, and of C-13 against alpha captures. The less efficient regimes for heavy element synthesis are shown to be those producing the highest amounts of rare light isotopes, such as N-15, O-17, and F-19. Simple analytic approximations for three of these regimes are proposed which have application to the prediction of the number of neutrons captured by heavy seed nuclei in a given stellar environment, as well as the associated N-14 yield.
