Near-infrared speckle observations of the Red Rectangle showed a more complicated structure than found in earlier studies. Of the two components of different size known so far, the smaller one was resolved again into two: one narrow structure 0.2 arcsec in size which is superimposed on the more extended infrared the emission of 0.4 x 0.9 arcsec, and a compact source unresolved in measurements. The compact source, which is identified with the star HD 44179, is offset to the south by 0.15 arcsec from the other two components. These results only could be obtained by using image reconstruction techniques. In contrast to the common assumption that HD 44179 is at the hearth of the object, they allow the tentative interpretaion that this is not the central star of the Red Rectangle but may be its companion.
