Long-slit spectra of 11 bright elliptical galaxies are used here to study the radial behavior of various atomic and molecular absorption features in these objects. The data reinforce the idea that population gradients are common occurrences in elliptical galaxies. Pronounced radial gradients are seen in the Mg1, Mg2, MgB, Fe5270, Fe5335, and Na5895 indices, but the TiO bands show only weak radial variations. The strength of the H-beta and H-alpha absorption typically does not change with radius in those systems where forbidden O III emission, and hence Balmer emission, is small. Other data on Mg2 suggest that, on average, the radial variations in stellar content are probably due to a single parameter, and that star formation histories of elliptical galaxies have not been uniform.
