It is proposed that an inhomogeneous jet model can explain the gamma-ray emission of 3C 279 as being due to synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the inner and intermediate part of the jet, if the magnetic field is sufficiently below equipartition with the radiation field. It is suggested that the gamma rays of 3C 279 could be produced by the synchrotron process, if the energy of the emitting electrons is sufficiently large.
