The application of the discrete ordinate method of solving the radiative transfer equation as developed by Wehrse (1985) and Schmidt and Wehrse (1987) to a resonance line in a planetary atmosphere is discussed. It is shown that the construction of a quasi-analytical solution to the corresponding matrix diagonalization problem reduces the time calculation and permits the use of more dense discrete frequency and angle grids. A comparison with previous work shows that the present method reduces the computation time by more than a factor of 10 and is more appropriate in all cases.
