Independent derivations of the parameters characterizing relativistic effect in compact sources are discussed on the basis of relevant data from the literature for all sources with core sizes directly measured with VLBI. BL Lac objects in the present sample need a significantly lower average beaming factor than highly polarized quasars. The intrinsic brightness temperature of the VLBI core of the sources, obtained using Doppler factors, is distributed in a very narrow range around a mean value which is in excellent agreement with theoretical expectations. Superluminal sources have an apparent velocity which roughly correlates with the derived beaming factor, indicating that the pattern speed should be roughly equal to the bulk speed of the plasma.
