In contrast to Einstein's general relativity, alternate theories that are consistent with all experimental evidence predict gravitationally collapsed objects that are similar to black holes but without event horizons or infinite redshift surfaces. Red holes, as these objects are called, have unbounded but not infinite redshifts. Small ones can be denser and more massive than neutron stars; large red holes may lie at the centers of AGNs. The red-hole model fits some AGN phenomena better than the black-hole model. We discuss how finite-density collapsing objects can reach equilibrium and stop collapsing at a finite maximum redshift: objects falling inside the photon orbit of a red hole experience decreasing rather than increasing local density, preventing the object from reaching infinite density and ultimately stopping the collapse. Furthermore, objects falling into these red holes can fall all the way through and emerge on the other side. We calculate transit times for AGN-size red holes, resulting in time scales generally consistent with observed AGN phenomena.
