The Galactic center is host to energetic activity related to star formation and possibly a weak active nucleus. The mid-infrared spectrum of this region exhibits line emission from predominantly low-ionization species, which has been interpreted in the past as evidence for photoionization by stars with T {lower .5exhbox {; \buildrel < \over \sim ;}} 35,000 K. However, low-ionization emission can also be generated in partially ionized zones produced by much harder continuum radiation of the sort observed in active galactic nuclei. We present the results of photoionization calculations in order to reexamine the question of what energetic sources dominate the Galactic center. We also consider implications for the chemical abundances and physical conditions in the emission-line plasma.
