It is shown that the thermal contraction in the cooling of degenerate neutron stars produces a correction to the net luminosity of order (piT/Tf)2, where T is the temperature and Tf is the Fermi temperature of the supporting matter. Therefore, except in the atmosphere or at very early times, thermal effects on the netural star structure can be neglected in computing the cooling of neutron stars.
