Recent observations of lithium in samples of red giant stars in the field and in clusters, among both Population I and II, have lead to an improved understanding of the process of lithium dilution and of the evolution of low mass red giant stars. Several lines of evidence suggest that another mechanism in addition to dilution is required to explain the very low lithium abundances found among the red giants; lithium depletion on the giant branch may also be necessary. The origin of the few lithium rich red giants discovered to date remains mysterious.
