The construction of the first Keck Telescope is nearing completion with the construction of a second essentially identical telescope now underway. This observatory is a joint project of the University of California and the California Institute of Technology with the collaboration of the University of Hawaii. Oversight of the project is the responsibility of the California Association for Research in Astronomy (CARA). CARA is composed of equal representation from the University of California and the California Institute of Technology. Scientific guidance is provided by a Science Steering Committee composed of scientists from the University of California and the California Institute of Technology, with representation from the University of Hawaii. The construction effort has been guided by Project Manager Gerald Smith and Project Scientist Jerry Nelson. Focal plane instrumentation is nearing completion with 4 instruments being ready for the first year of operation of the telescope. These constitute two optical spectrographs, and two infrared cameras. These were built in the University of California and at the California Institute of Technology. Scientific observing is expected to begin in the second half of 1992. It is planned that, after the completion of the second Keck Telescope, the two telescopes can be used in an interferometric mode.
