Optical and X-ray observations of the recurrent X-ray transient A0538-66 are presented. This source is shown to be a member of the LMC, and is therefore among the most luminous stellar sources known. The optical counterpart, star Q (Johnston et al., 1980), is a slightly evolved late O to early B-type star with episodes of Be-type behavior. It is suggested that the transient nature of A0538-66 is a result of time-dependent accretion; during Be star phases the compact component accretes material near periastron in its 16.668 day orbit from a disklike circumstellar envelope, turning into an intense recurrent X-ray transient. The absence of X-ray flux during normal OB star phases indicates that the compact star is then largely deprived of matter to accrete.
