Symmetry Restoration, Dark Matter, Amplified Fluctuations

We investigate the possible resonantly enhanced spectrum of fluctuations arising during preheating in chaotic inflationary models, and consider the ramifications for cosmological observations. In particular we examine the questions of non-thermal symmetry restoration and defect production, pattern formation, and amplification of metric inhomogeneities. We use numerical methods to tackle these inherently non-linear problems. Firstly, we study the decay of the inflaton into another scalar field with symmetry breaking potential. We show that symmetry restoration is not possible if the symmetry has been initially broken during inflation. This means unwanted topological defects will not be produced in the post-inflationary universe in this model. Secondly, we propose that the early universe, just after inflation, may be a driven-dissipative system. We then show that pattern formation can occur in the spatial configuration of the inflaton energy density, in the weakly non-linear regime. We suggest this may affect dark matter scenarios and structure formation. Lastly, we initiate a framework in which to study amplified fluctuation in both the matter fields and the spacetime metric, without resorting to perturbation the theory. We do this by numerically solving the Einstein field equations. We show that significant metric inhomogeneity can be generated in the early universe and that non-linear effects cause power to be transferred to all scales.
