We present medium and low resolution spectra of the Lyman forest, and the region between the Ly-alpha and C IV emission lines respectively of the Z(em) = 2.331 quasar Q 2224-408 A, in an ongoing study of the effect of the ionizing flux from line of sight foreground neighbors on the spectra of background quasars. We find no observable effect, and conclude that with the amount of data presently available we can exclude a simple isotropic ionization model on the 3.2 sigma level. If this result is interpreted as beaming of the quasar flux, we can set a 2 sigma upper limit of 0.22 on the fraction of 'forward directed' flux emitted perpendicular to the line of sight. If interpreted in terms of quasar variability, the 2 sigma limit of 0.22 refers to the flux ratio of a quasar in its low and high state. These results are resting upon the assumption that the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the environment of close quasar pairs is identical to that found in intergalactic space as a whole, which is possibly not the case.
