Clusters of galaxies are not distributed randomly in space, but are themselves clustered together on scales ≅10 → 100 h-1Mpc, where h ≅ 0.5 → 1 is Hubble's constant in units of 100 km sec-1Mpc-1. On such scales the amplitude of this clustering, measured by the cluster correlation function (ξcc), is of particular interest as it can discriminate between cosmological theories. The authors present ξcc for 128 X-ray emitting clusters that were detected in the all-sky survey carried out by the ROSAT X-ray satellite. They find a well defined correlation length of r0 = 13.7(±2.3) h-1Mpc, where ξcc = (r/r0)-1.9(±0.4). This implies that the distribution of X-ray clusters is 7 times more clustered than that of galaxies. The amplitude of clustering found appears to be too large to be consistent with an Ω = 1 cold dark matter dominated Universe.
