Solar energetic particle events that occur in the midst of an active solar cycle often propagate into a disturbed interplanetary medium which can significantly affect the spectral shape, time-intensity profile, relative composition, and the angular distributions of the charged energetic particles. This active and dynamic state of the heliosphere affected the bulk of the SEP events observed over solar cycle 23. Because of the protracted solar minimum preceding solar cycle 24, its recent development offers a relatively undisturbed interplanetary medium wherein the energetic particles may be less influenced by the various transport effects. A clear distinction between the effects that a disturbed and an undisturbed medium impose on the energetic particles is essential to extracting the signatures of the acceleration/injection mechanisms at or near the Sun. We examine early events in solar cycle 24 to explore the spectral, time-intensity, composition, and angular distribution effects of the relatively undisturbed interplanetary medium.
