Three observational techniques for identifying a distance dependence of the gravitational constant are developed mathematically. The methods devised involve comparing the astronomical-unit values calculated from radar observations of different planets, or comparing radar and optical planetary-mean-motion measurements, or using radar range measurements to a planet to determine simultaneously the astronomical unit and the orbital elements of both the planet and the earth. The expressions derived are compatible with currently used planetary-motion algorithms and permit at least a preliminary analysis of a G dependence. Since the possible deviation will be as small (of the order of 10 to the -8th) as relativistic effects, the latter must be accounted for in modeling planetary motion and light propagation.
