After a brief review of the history of the Crab Nebula, the author discusses a few areas of currently active research. Models of the origin of the nebular magnetic field generally assume a direct link with the pulsar. However, the 30-Hz wave picture seems to be ruled out, while a toroidal structure, generated from the component of magnetic axis aligned with the rotation axis, is also not favoured for the Crab or related objects. There is no conclusive evidence for a high-velocity shell around the Crab Nebula. Some recent results on supernova remnants which resemble the Crab, especially their X-radiation and relationship to pulsars and shell remnants, are summarized.
