Anderson's (1982) continental insulation model, which relates palaeocontinental configurations to geoid anomalies, is shown to be an inadequate explanation of the undulations of subduction-compensated geoid. For example, the dimensions of Pacific and Africa-Atlantic geoid highs vis-a-vis those of the corresponding Pacific and Pangea supercontinents pose a problem. The geoid highs and lows are shown to correlate well with the overall divergent and convergent plate tectonism since the middle Paleozoic and are thus ascribed, respectively, to the ascending and descending patterns of lower-mantle convection.
