Under the reasonable assumption that the broad blue-shifted absorption line components observed in the spectra of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars arise from the scattering of line photons in a gas which is - spherically - ejected from a central core, the author shows that the technique of the first order moment of an unsaturated P Cygni profile can be conveniently applied to the observations in order to derive the mass-loss rates of BAL quasars.
